KHFarms - Mount Olive, North Carolina

KHFarms is focused on growing grass-efficient, high-fertility Hereford cattle that produce the highest-quality, best-tasting beef anywhere in the U.S., while improving local health and farm profitability.
By using cattle to improve the health of the soil, we’re able to grow healthy pastures—which are the key to our farm’s healthy, flavorful pasture-raised beef, pork and poultry products.

  • To produce grass-efficient, high-fertility Hereford genetics
  • To raise the most flavorful, best tasting Hereford beef
  • To design nutrient-dense pasture seed mixes for local cattlemen
  • To share soil health experiences with other farmers to multiply these results in other communities
  • To source nutritious meats, fruits and vegetables for local community health and well being

KHFarms is proud to be a female-owned farm, with Karen Scalf serving as the Chief Farmer and CEO. She handles all the breeding and management of the cattle herds. Karen is an involved community member and when not tending to the cows, visiting the hogs, checking on the chickens, or making sure everyone has something for supper, she sits on the Duplin County
Farm Bureau Board of Directors (20-plus years and still going). She is a past Vice-President of the Duplin County Cattleman's Association and remains an agrarian advocate for regenerative farming and building stronger farm families and communities.

Karen and her husband Gary have been married for 25 years and have made Duplin County, NC their permanent home. They love the quiet life and their life on the farm, but they enjoy sharing it with their three children best.

As it was once said, and is now practiced every day at KHFarms, "The family that works together, grows together."

Farm to Family

“No other decision has been as monumental as the three days we chose to take part in the Soil Health Academy. To be grounded in the truth about soil, our family was given a new hope for profitability and longevity that would extend into the next generation.”
